Lyme Disease on the Rise

[]

• 10 years ago most of the Lyme Disease seen in Minnesota was found near the Wisconsin border. 5 years ago there was an increase of Lyme Disease detected in the Grand Rapids area. Last year and now this year we are seeing a steady and dramatic increase of Lyme Disease present in dogs seen at our clinic in Bemidji.

• Studies have shown Lyme positive dogs will develop symptoms at the rate of 5% per year. Example: If a dog was infected with Lyme from a tick bite in 1997, the dog will have a 25% chance of having symptoms in 2003; If a dog was infected with Lyme from a tick bite in 2003, the dog will have a 50% chance of having symptoms in 2012.

• Symptoms of Lyme Disease are more difficult to detect in animals than in people. Many dogs affected with Lyme Disease are taken to a veterinarian because they seem to be experiencing generalized pain and have stopped eating. Affected dogs have been described as if they were “walking on eggshells” and often these animals have high fevers.

• Painful lameness may appears suddenly and shift from one leg to another. If untreated, it may eventually disappear, only to recur weeks or months later.

• We can test your dog for Lyme Disease in our lab at Animal Care Clinic. Many dogs with Lyme Disease are not showing signs at the time of the test but are infected with the Lyme organism. If your dog has Lyme Disease, early detection and treatment will prevent your pet from unnecessary illness and discomfort.

• The best way to prevent Lyme Disease is to protect your dog with Frontline monthly (April through October) and annual Lyme vaccinations.
